HABS (FINALLY) DEAL TINORDI TO ARIZONA Friday, January 15, 2016
In a three-way trade, the Arizona Coyotes acquired defenseman Jarred Tinordi and winger Stefan Fournier from the Montreal Canadiens; the Canadiens acquired winger John Scott from Arizona and defenseman Victor Bartley from the Nashville Predators; and the Predators acquired defenseman Stefan Elliott from Arizona.
What does it give the Arizona Coyotes?
This is an interesting deal, especially for the Coyotes. In exchange for a little-used enforcer (Scott) and recently-waived depth defenseman (Elliott), Arizona lands a 23-year-old defenseman with size and a physical edge to his game in Tinordi. He could be the heir apparent to Nicklas Grossmaan (pending UFA) for 2016-17.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens?
Montreal had been trying to trade Tinordi, who was their No. 9 defenseman at the time of the deal, since the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign. GM Marc Bergevin decided to finally part ways with him, accepting a minimal package in return. Scott provides veteran enforcing, while Bartley adds blueline depth from the AHL.
What does it give the Nashville Predators?
In Elliott, the Predators get a right-handed offensive defenseman who might be able to help replace the recently departed Seth Jones. Don't be surprised if Elliott supplants both Anthony Bitetto and Petter Granberg on Nashville's third pairing alongside veteran stay-at-home defender Barret Jackman.
Fantasy Impact
Tinordi is a stay-at-home defender with size, so his fantasy value will be limited regardless of where he plays. Scott won't play enough to register interesting penalty-minute totals, while Elliott has some dark-horse appeal (wherever he winds up). Bartley is now buried on the Montreal depth chart after being buried in the Nashville system, so his value remains negligible. Ditto Fournier, who is merely AHL fodder at this point.
