The Red Wings bought out the remaining three years on Weiss' contract Tuesday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

Detroit took a, 2-0, lead on Weiss' power-play goal early in the third period, but Boston scored three unanswered goals to win in regulation, 3-2. Weiss has nine goals and 14 assists in 47 games this season.

After battling injury and playing in only 26 games a season ago, Weiss has much to prove. He finished with four points in 2013-14, and will most likely go undrafted heading into this season.

He is optimistic that he'll be ready to go for training camp in the fall.

Detroit is considering sending Weiss back to the doctor who performed his sports hernia surgery in December. Weiss' first season with Detroit couldn't have gone much worse as he scored just two goals and four points in 26 games.

The Wings were encouraged to see Weiss back on the ice but don't expect him to return to action during the regualr season. It has been a nightmare campaign for the former Panther as he played poorly when in the lineup and has missed the bulk of the season due to injury.
