Hamilton gives Calgary yet more solid organizational depth up the middle. He's been a productive point producer and a good two-way player in both the junior ranks and the AHL, but has yet to prove himself as much in the NHL. Brother Dougie is a cornerstone player for the Flames, and having his older sibling around might help both of them. That said, Freddie will start off with the AHL's Stockton Heat, and may have an uphill climb to push for NHL time this season.

With the likes of Joey Hishon, Marc-Andre Cliche, and Ben Street in the AHL, the Avs are already deep at the center spot on their top farm club. With that in mind, Hamilton became expendable and Colorado saves a bit of money here while getting something in return for him.

Hamilton's solid two-way game and above-average offensive ability suggest he might be a dark horse if/when he gets another NHL call-up. Then again, he probably has Markus Granlund and Drew Shore ahead of him to be first center summoned from Stockton when the opportunity arises. Ignore him in all fantasy formats until the call-up. The deal doesn't affect anyone on the Avs.
