PENS GET WINGER HELP IN DAVID PERRON Friday, January 2, 2015
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers for winger Rob Klinkhammer and a first-round draft pick in 2015
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins?
The Penguins have been beset with injuries this season, especially at both wing positions. Enter Perron, who is a creative, versatile winger who also plays with some grit (he's an agitator). He will probably wind up playing left wing in Pittsburgh, either with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. The Pens paid a steep price here but Perron is still just 26 years old and should have several productive seasons left.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers?
For the Oilers, this is yet another sign that the 2014-15 campaign is a lost cause. Having said that, adding another first rounder in what is expected to be a great draft is the right move, right now. After all, Perron had been rumored to have asked for a trade (and was about to enter the final year of his contract). Klinkhammer is a big body who can provide a little depth for Edmonton, but he's not a long-range answer.
Fantasy Impact
Perron's fantasy value skyrockets here now that he's landed in Pittsburgh. As long as he plays with either Crosby or Malkin, he should produce better totals. Klinkhammer's value remains stagnant, as he is likely to continue to play a depth role. The first rounder sent to Edmonton by Pittsburgh may wind up playing in the NHL a lot earlier now that he is Oilers property. Another potential winner in this deal is Edmonton's Yakupov who may see more ice time with Perron gone.
