SHARKS LAND TYE McGINN FROM PHILLY Wednesday, July 2, 2014
The San Jose Sharks acquired winger Tye McGinn from the Philadelphia Flyers for a third-round draft pick in 2015.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks?
The Sharks once had older brother McGinn now with Colorado, so now they land the grittier, not as offensive sibling. McGinn could find his way to a regular role in San Jose, a team looking to change their identity (and their fortunes). There is some untapped upside here.
What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers?
The Flyers decided to dump McGinn rather than negotiate a new contract, as he's currently a restricted free agent. Philadelphia is a bit cap-strapped at present time, so this move may have been strictly cap-motivated. They'll seek cheaper talent to fill out their bottom-six forward group.
Fantasy Impact
McGinn is a bit of a dark horse in fantasy circles, though he may be limited to bottom-six forward duties on his new team. By moving McGinn, the Flyers may have opened up a spot for rookie Scott Laughton to make the team. His fantasy value goes up after this.
