JAKE ALLEN ADDED BY MONTREAL Wednesday, September 2, 2020
The Montreal Canadiens acquired goaltender Jake Allen and a seventh-round draft pick in 2022 from the St. Louis Blues for a third-round draft pick in 2020 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens?
The Canadiens have struggled to find a reliable backup to Carey Price for some time now, which justifies the decision to add Allen here. The latter is expensive for a No. 2 netminder ($4.35 million) but his contract will end after the 2020-21 campaign. At that time, the Habs are hoping prospect Cayden Primeau will be ready to handle backup duties.
What does it give the St. Louis Blues?
St. Louis was looking to shed cap space this off-season, so they did a fantastic job here by moving out Allen's contract without taking another one back. The Blues may have the ability to re-sign captain (and pending UFA defenseman) Alex Pietrangelo after all. Jordan Binnington remains the No. 1 goalkeeper in St. Louis, and they have a lot of prospects coming.
Fantasy Impact
All of Allen's fantasy value is pretty much gone after moving to Montreal. He will spend 2020-21 as Price's fantasy handcuff, and then hit the open market with the hope of landing at least a No. 1B gig somewhere.
