Ottawa Senators Eastern Conference Atlantic Division
Trade Details
PAGEAU PICKED UP BY THE ISLANDERS Monday, February 24, 2020
The New York Islanders acquired center Jean-Gabriel Pageau from the Ottawa Senators for a conditional first-round draft pick in 2020, a second-round draft pick in 2020 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2022.
What does it give the New York Islanders?
In Pageau, the Islanders land one of the top available forwards at this year's deadline. He plays a strong, gritty two-way game so he should fit like a glove on Long Island. Isles GM Lou Lamoriello paid a steep price in future assets to acquire Pageau (a pending UFA) but he did not trade away any roster players. The Islanders now become a stronger contender in the Eastern Conference with Pageau on board.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators?
This is a tremendous move by Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion, who was able to land the Islanders' first in '20 (which would become a first in '21 if New York wins the draft lottery this year and drafts in the top 3), a second in '20 and a conditional third in '22 (which would be transferred to Ottawa ONLY if the Islanders win the 2020 Stanley Cup) in exchange for a potential unrestricted free agent. Wow!
Fantasy Impact
Pageau goes from being Ottawa's unquestioned No. 1 center to a likely bottom-six center in New York. Therefore, this is a bad trade from a fantasy perspective for all Pageau fantasy owners. That said, he is still worth picking up if dropped in most leagues.
