DETROIT DEALS FOR GOALTENDER COMRIE Saturday, November 30, 2019
The Detroit Red Wings acquired goaltender Eric Comrie from the Arizona Coyotes for defenseman Vili Saarijarvi.
What does it give the Detroit Red Wings?
This could become an important trade for the Red Wings, who currently have no definitive goaltender of the future. Comrie, 24, has plenty of upside as a starting goaltender in the NHL. However, he was stuck behind Connor Hellebuyck in Winnipeg and was the clear third stringer in Arizona too. Look for Comrie to get significant playing time at some point.
What does it give the Arizona Coyotes?
This was good asset management by Arizona, as Comrie was claimed off waivers earlier this season (but was never really going to play for a Coyotes team that boasts an excellent goaltending tandem in Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper). In Saarijarvi, Arizona adds another solid blueline prospect for the coffers. Well done, John Chayka.
Fantasy Impact
Comrie's fantasy stock should rise significantly after this trade. It may not happen immediately but Comrie has a chance to earn the starting gig in Detroit. As for Saarijarvi, his long-range upside remains solid after this deal. He is on the keeper radar but does not need to be owned immediately.
