Joe Whitney has been returned to the minors.
He'll be back in AHL Albany in time for his bobblehead night. Whitney logged just 8:00 of ice time in his NHL debut on Friday night.
Skating on the top line with Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr for most of the first two periods before getting only two shifts in the third, Joe Whitney played eight minutes in the Devils' win Friday night.
He didn't register a shot on goal but "I thought he did a good job," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "Tough spot to be thrown into, and I thought he held his own." Whitney turns 26 next week.
Joe Whitney is getting ready to make his NHL debut on Friday.
Whitney has 16 goals and 36 points in 40 AHL contests in 2013-14. He'll turn 26 on Feb. 6, but he's getting a chance to play alongside Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr. He's been successful in the AHL for a while now, but the fact that he only stands at 5-foot-6 has led some to doubt his ability to make the leap to the NHL. "You always hear it," Whitney said. "It's something that I can't control and I just work that much harder to overcome it and, for all the people that haven't given me a chance because of it, I try to prove those people wrong."
Joe Whitney has been recalled by New Jersey.
He leads AHL Albany with 36 points (16 goals, 20 assists) in 40 games this season. Whitney skated on a line with Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr on Thursday. "With everybody becoming healthy we've got to try to find a left wing for Travis and Jagr," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "So, we're going to give Joe a chance. He's leading us in scoring in the minors, he led us last year and he deserves the opportunity and we'll just go from there."
