Montreal was complying with Robert Mayer's request when they put him on unconditional waivers.
Mayer, who is 24 and has been stuck in the AHL, wants to part ways with the Canadiens so that he can continue his career in Switzerland. He had a 2.80 GAA and .909 save percentage in 29 AHL contests in 2013-14. Given that Carey Price will occupy the starting job for the foreseeable future and Dustin Tokarski is more likely than Mayer to win the starting job should Peter Budaj leave when his contract expires this summer, it's not shocking that Mayer wants to explore his other options.
The Montreal Canadiens have put Robert Mayer on unconditional waivers.
Assuming Mayer clears waivers, the Canadiens are expected to terminate his contract. He had a 2.80 GAA and .909 save percentage in 29 games with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs in 2013-14. The 24-year-old undrafted prospected never appeared in an NHL game with Montreal.
Robert Mayer will serve as Peter Budaj's backup Thursday night in Game 5.
Number one goaltender Carey Price has been ruled out for the rest of the series due to a lower-body injury. Mayer has never played in an NHL game.
Robert Mayer has been called up by the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal needed another goaltender because Carey Price is sick. Mayer hasn't made his NHL debut and he will probably just warm the bench during this stint with Montreal.
