Stempniak announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday, Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com reports.

Stempniak was returned to AHL Providence on Monday, Conor Ryan of the Daily Free Press reports.

Stempniak was recalled from AHL Providence on an emergency basis Saturday.

Stempniak scored a goal and two assists in Monday's 4-3 preseason win over the Flyers.

Stempniak will join the Bruins for training camp on a professional tryout agreement.

Stempniak skated just 7:57 and was a minus-3 with zero shots on goal in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Coyotes.

Stempniak snapped a six-game pointless streak with an assist in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Avalanche.

Stempniak delivered an assist in his season debut Friday night against the Capitals, but it wasn't enough as the Hurricanes lost 4-3 in Raleigh.

Stempniak (upper body) is not scheduled to play Tuesday night's game in Tampa Bay, but will likely draw into the lineup for either or both of Carolina's games against Washington on Thursday and Friday, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
