SHARKS, 'HAWKS SWAP DEPTH FORWARDS Monday, March 2, 2015
The San Jose Sharks acquired forward Ben Smith and a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2017 from the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Andrew Desjardins.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks?
Smith is a better penalty killer than Desjardins, and he's a right-handed shooter, so perhaps these are reasons for this deal from a San Jose perspective. Smith is also under contract for 2015-16, while Desjardins is a pending unrestricted free agent.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks?
Desjardins is a bit bigger, and a bit grittier, than Smith. He can also play both wing and center, so his versatility could help the contending 'Hawks. Because Chicago is deep at center now that Vermette is on board, look for Desjardins to play left wing in Chi-town.
Fantasy Impact
Neither Smith nor Desjardins has a lot of fantasy value, though perhaps Smith may see a bit more ice time with the Sharks. Still, not much to see here.
