Trade Details
HABS LAND PETRY FROM EDMONTON Monday, March 2, 2015
The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Jeff Petry from the Edmonton Oilers for a second-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2015.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens?
In Petry, the Habs land one of the top potential unrestricted free agent defensemen at the deadline in Petry, a quality puck mover with good size. He's an upgrade for their top four rearguards and could end up playing alongside promising youngster Beaulieu Petry may not stay in Montreal beyond this season, but this deal is clearly all about going for a Stanley Cup this spring.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers?
This is the right move for the Oilers at this time, because they want future assets only for their potential UFA talent. They get a second rounder from Montreal, plus a fifth rounder (which could turn into a fourth or third, depending on how far the Habs go in the postseason). So this trade looks like a win-win situation for both teams involved.
Fantasy Impact
Petry's fantasy value should get a lot better down the stretch, and his plus/minus rating will be significantly improved in Montreal. This deal hurts Montreal defensemen such as veteran Gonchar and youngster Pateryn (among others), though.
