BLACKHAWKS LAND VETERAN D TIMONEN Friday, February 27, 2015
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Kimmo Timonen from the Philadelphia Flyers for a second-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks?
This is an interesting move for the Blackhawks, since Timonen hasn't played at all this season due to a blood clot issue. That said, he's a battle-tested warrior who gives Chicago another solid option for their blueline. With Oduya currently injured, and grizzled veteran Rozsival wearing down as the season rolls along, Timonen should provide a fresh depth option for the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup run.
What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers?
The Flyers are doing a very classy move here by giving Timonen another shot at a Stanley Cup, but they're also receiving a great return. The picks will definitely help Philadelphia down the road, while the loss of Timonen alleviates a potential logjam along the blueline. For a player who is 39 years old and hasn't played due to a bloot clot issue, the Flyers hit a home run here by landing a second rounder (plus another potential pick).
Fantasy Impact
Timonen's fantasy value will probably be tied to his plus/minus rating, which should improve in Chicago over what could have been in Philly. Still, he isn't likely to provide a ton of offense at this point of the season (and with so little hockey played).
