JETS GET TLUSTY FROM THE HURRICANES Wednesday, February 25, 2015
The Winnipeg Jets acquired winger Jiri Tlusty from the Carolina Hurricanes for a third-round draft pick in 2016 and a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2015.
What does it give the Winnipeg Jets?
This deal was expected ever since the Jets traded left-winger Kane to the Sabres (he was injured, so they needed to replace him regardless). Tlusty will play a top-nine role with the Jets under his former head coach, Paul Maurice. With injuries to Perreault Halischuk and currently Wheeler Winnipeg needed another winger. This move may allow Byfuglien to return to defense (his preferred position).
What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes?
For the 'Canes, this may only be the beginning. Jettisoning Tlusty was expected, since he was one of Carolina's pending unrestricted free agents. They did fairly well to get back a third rounder for his services, with the potential for a second draft pick headed their way as well. This essentially begins the Hurricanes' lengthy rebuilding process, and it's expected to continue with the departure of defenseman Sekera before the March 2 trade deadline.
Fantasy Impact
Tlusty's fantasy value may receive a small spike, mostly due to being a bit more motivated to play on a team with serious playoff aspirations. Reuniting with Maurice may also do him some good. The winners in Carolina after Tlusty's departure could be Lindholm and Nestrasil candidates for top-line duty with Tlusty gone.
