RANGERS TRADE TWO FOR ONE Monday, October 6, 2014
The New York Rangers acquired forward Joey Crabb from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Steven Kampfer and forward Andrew Yogan.
What does it give the New York Rangers?
Crabb is a solid veteran / journeyman depth forward, but the key here is the Rangers open up a roster spot to keep rising prospect forward Duclair Young Duclair has wowed the team in preseason play, and despite being just 19 years old he has a chance to stick in the NHL this season. Moving two contracts (in Kampfer's and Yogan's) helps New York stay within the 50-contract limit, and keeps them from being forced to send Duclair back to junior.
What does it give the Florida Panthers?
Kampfer and Yogan are depth players for the Panthers, although Yogan may still have some untapped offensive potential. Whatever the case, both new acquisitions might spend most of the upcoming campaign in the AHL (although Kampfer might be just as likely to provide the Panthers with some bottom-pair defensive depth in the coming campaign). Aging vet Crabb clearly wasn't in the youth-focused Panthers' plans, and none of these contracts are expensive. This is a solid depth move.
Fantasy Impact
Fantasy-wise the only player worth keeping an eye on here is Duclair, who now gets a chance to stick with the big club in New York. That doesn't guarantee he'll continue his scorching play, but it does make him a fantasy sleeper to have on the radar now.
