Trade Details
ANDREAS JOHNSSON ADDED BY NEW JERSEY Saturday, October 10, 2020
The New Jersey Devils acquired winger Andreas Johnsson from the Toronto Maple Leafs for winger Joey Anderson.
What does it give the New Jersey Devils?
In Johnsson, the Devils land a solid scoring winger who has a chance to produce more offense with his new team if he receives an expanded role with his new squad. Expect the port sider, who turns 26 next month, to line up next to either Nico Hischier or Jack Hughes in a top-six winger role for New Jersey. This is a solid pickup for the Devils, and they did not have to part with much to get him.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs?
For Toronto, this trade is mostly about shedding a more expensive contract in Johnsson in order to re-sign restricted free agents Ilya Mikheyev and Travis Dermott. The Maple Leafs are currrently slightly over the salary cap, so more moves are required. The emergence of teenaged winger Nicholas Robertson made Johnsson expendable. Anderson should play a depth role for Toronto.
Fantasy Impact
Johnsson has some sleeper appeal as a member of the Devils. As long as he is picked late in most formats, the Swedish winger could become a steal for fantasy owners. As for Anderson, he will mostly be a defensive winger with penalty-killing duties, so there is no need to draft him.
