Trade Details
TOFFOLI TRADED TO VANCOUVER Monday, February 17, 2020
The Vancouver Canucks acquired winger Tyler Toffoli from the Los Angeles Kings for center Tyler Madden, forward Tim Schaller, a second-round draft pick in 2020 and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2022.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks?
The Canucks were definitely in the market for a scoring winger, preferably for the right wing position. Enter Toffoli, one of the top potential UFA wingers on this year's trade market. The one-time Stanley Cup champion, who turns 28 in late April, should help Vancouver in the goals department (especially with wingers Brock Boeser, Josh Leivo and Micheal Ferland all currently sidelined due to injury. Vancouver did well here, especially because the cost to acquire Toffoli was not exorbitant.
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings?
The Kings did reasonably well with this trade, despite the fact they were not able to get back a first-round draft pick. Madden is having a strong sophomore campaign at Northeastern University and can be considered the key to the trade from an LA perspective. The second-round pick in '20 should also reap a reward, eventually, while the fourth-round draft pick in '22 will only be acquired by the Kings if Toffoli re-signs with Vancouver this off-season. Schaller was added to balance out the cap situation.
Fantasy Impact
An underrated aspect of this trade is the fact Toffoli could be reunited with longtime linemate Tanner Pearson on the Canucks. Therefore, Toffoli's stock should remain solid with Vancouver (and should be picked up in all league formats if currently available). He can also be a trade target in most leagues. Schaller has no fantasy value, while Madden may have trouble with the numbers game now that he joins a loaded Kings prospects pool. Madden will almost certainly have to convert to a wing position due to LA's deep center talent coming up.
