Trade Details
BLACKHAWKS, HURRICANES SWAP FOUR Monday, June 24, 2019
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Calvin De Haan and forward Aleksi Saarela from the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Gustav Forsling and goaltender Anton Forsberg.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks?
While he is currently injured, De Haan should be a solid addition to Chicago's blueline in 2019-20. When he actually debuts with the Blackhawks is not known but look for him to play on the third line upon his return. Saarela is an intriguing prospect who should see action in the NHL in '19-20. He adds solid depth and versatility (he can play either left wing or center). Look for Saarela to compete for a roster spot in training camp. He is coming off a strong AHL campaign and appears ready for the NHL.
What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes?
The Hurricanes may be ready to make a major splash either in free agency or via blockbuster trade action, as this trade saves Carolina $4.5 million (De Haan's cap hit through '21-22). Forsling is a decent addition to the blueline corps and will probably compete with Jake Bean and Haydn Fleury for playing time. Forsberg adds goaltending depth and could become Carolina's third-stringer in 2019-20. Both Forsling and Forsberg are restricted free agents and need new contracts.
Fantasy Impact
This trade should help all four players moving forward, though De Haan's value (which was not particularly high to begin with) is still delayed due to his current injury. Saarela is a solid prospect and should still be considered a candidate to see a fair amount of NHL action as a rookie in 2019-20. He is worth picking up in keeper-league drafts. Forsling is another intriguing fantasy option, though he should not yet be drafted until he establishes himself with his new team. Forsberg is not expected to play more than a depth role in Carolina, although they currently have only top prospect Alex Nedeljkovic ahead of Forsberg on the depth chart.
