GOLDEN KNIGHTS GET MARK STONE Monday, February 25, 2019
The Vegas Golden Knights acquired wingers Mark Stone and Tobias Lindberg from the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Erik Brannstrom, forward Oscar Lindberg and a second-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Vegas Golden Knights?
Vegas was able to land the biggest fish in the pond, and they even agreed to terms with Stone on an eight-year contract extension shortly after the trade. He will help the team's offensive, play a major role on special teams and give the Golden Knights a much better chance to get back to the Stanley Cup finals. In order to get the biggest piece available at this year's trade deadline, the Knights had to part with top prospect Brannstrom. You have to give to get.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators?
In Brannstrom, the Senators land a top prospect who was clearly the centerpiece of this trade. The Swedish blueliner could play a big role in Ottawa next season, and he joins Thomas Chabot as cornerstone defensemen for the future of the Senators franchise. Oscar Lindberg is another Swede for an organization that has done very well with players hailing from Tre Kronor. He provides depth, while the second rounder in '20 adds to the future assets pool.
Fantasy Impact
Stone is a fantasy impact player regardless of where he is, and this trade does not hurt his stock in any way. Brannstrom is the big winner here, as he will likely be in the NHL next season with Ottawa now. He should be picked up if available in any league format. Oscar Lindberg could wind up playing a much bigger role in Ottawa, so he may be worthy of a pickup between now and the end of 2018-19.
