OSCAR OFF TO CALGARY Monday, February 25, 2019
The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Oscar Fantenberg from the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Calgary Flames?
The Flames were looking for another left defenseman to complete their blueline corps, so they did well to add Fantenberg. The Swedish blueliner will likely pair up with countryman Rasmus Andersson on Calgary's third pairing. Fantenberg has been used on both special teams in Los Angeles, so Calgary has options here.
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings?
With Fantenberg scheduled for unrestricted free agency on July 1, the Kings did very well here to add a fourth rounder (which may become a third rounder if Calgary wins two rounds, and Fantenberg plays half their games) because Fantenberg has yet to play a full NHL regular season. The Kings are retooling this season, so this move makes a ton of sense.
Fantasy Impact
Fantenberg had minimal fantasy value before the deal, and his ice time figures to limit his value in Calgary as well. He was mostly added for depth purposes, but he does offer some intrigue from a fantasy standpoint.
