Trade Details
JENSEN JOINS THE CAPITALS Friday, February 22, 2019
The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Nick Jensen and a fifth-round draft pick in 2019 from the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Madison Bowey and a second-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Washington Capitals?
The Capitals did well by acquiring a depth defenseman last season, as Michal Kempny became a huge piece in Washington's run to their first Stanley Cup. They hope history will repeat itself, as Jensen should provide solid depth along the blueline. He is a pending unrestricted free agent, so he is likely to move on beyond 2018-19.
What does it give the Detroit Red Wings?
This is a solid return for the Red Wings, who land Bowey (a potential like-for-like replacement for Jensen along the blueline) and a second rounder in '20. Bowey is five years younger than Jensen, and the latter was expected to test the UFA market on July 1. Bowey just needs to become more confident in his all-around ability at the NHL level.
Fantasy Impact
This trade really helps Bowey, who is expected to see extensive action with Detroit down the stretch (as they begin to evaluate him for the future). He is worth a speculative pickup at this point. As for Jensen, his fantasy value will continue to be limited in Washington (especially since he will probably see a decrease in average ice time with the Capitals).
