BLACKHAWKS DEAL FOR DOMINIK KUBALIK Thursday, January 24, 2019
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired winger Dominik Kubalik from the Los Angeles Kings for a fifth-round draft pick in 2019.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks?
The Blackhawks will attempt to sign Kubalik, who is currently playing for HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National Liga A. A lanky winger with good goal-scoring acumen, Kubalik spent time in the OHL prior to being drafted by the Kings. Therefore, his adjustment to North America may not be lengthy if signed (Chicago has liked the progress of two other Czech-born forwards this season--David Kampf and Dominik Kahun).
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings?
The Kings essentially receive a free draft pick here (a fifth rounder, which originally belonged to the Arizona Coyotes). Los Angeles attempted to sign Kubalik on several occasions but were unsuccessful. Therefore, they will gladly accept draft pick compensation here for a player that was never likely to skate for them in the NHL. GM Rob Blake did well here, considering that dose of reality.
Fantasy Impact
Kubalik might be worth picking up in very deep keeper leagues if he can be safely stashed away until he signs with Chicago (if he signs). Otherwise, fantasy leaguers need to wait and see what happens here before making a commitment.
