The Flames are desperately trying to get back into the playoffs in the Western Conference, so to that end adding Stone will help. Calgary got the Coyotes to pay half of Stone's remaining salary in the deal. Stone will probably play a top-four rearguard role with the Flames for the rest of the season, bumping Deryk Engelland and Dennis Wideman down the depth chart in the process.

For the Coyotes, landing a third rounder in exchange for one of their pending unrestricted free agents is a pretty good deal (which can turn even better if Stone decides to re-sign with the Flames this summer, in which case Arizona will also receive a fifth rounder in the transaction). This is quite likely the first of a series of deals expected to be completed by the rebuilding 'Yotes.

Stone's short-term fantasy value should get a little spike moving to a contender, though his power-play ice time figures to suffer playing behind Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton and T.J. Brodie in Calgary. Perhaps the biggest winner in this deal from a fantasy perspective is Anthony DeAngelo (who is expected to replace Stone on Arizona's second pairing alongside Alex Goligoski). Fellow rookie Jakob Chychrun should also benefit from Stone's departure.
