CARDINALS ADD FORMER CLOSER CISHEK Friday, July 24, 2015
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired pitcher Steve Cishek from the Miami Marlins for pitcher Kyle Barraclough.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals?
The Cardinals have a closer in Trevor Rosenthal, plus setup men Kevin Siegrist and Seth Maness, so Cishek enters a new situation in the Show Me State. He'll provide some depth for the late innings but may have to settle for middle relief on the World Series contenders.
What does it give the Miami Marlins?
Cishek's 2015 campaign with the Marlins was a disaster. He lost his closer role and wound up back in the minor leagues. Therefore, Miami did well to send him to St. Louis in exchange for a young reliever (Barraclough) who is likely a few years away from contributing.
Fantasy Impact
Cishek won't be closing again anytime soon, so his fantasy value should take a hit as long as he's in St. Louis. This deal strengthens A.J. Ramos's hold on Miami's closer job, while Barraclough may now be on the long-range fantasy radar.
