San Diego Padres NL West
Trade Details
CLEVELAND'S CLEVINGER PICKED UP BY THE PADRES Monday, August 31, 2020
TThe San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Greg Allen, starting pitcher Mike Clevinger and a player to be named later (Matt Waldron - November 09 and 2020) from the Cleveland Indians for infielder Owen Miller, catcher Austin Hedges, outfielder Josh Naylor, pitcher Cal Quantrill, pitcher Gabriel Arias and pitcher Joey Cantillo.
What does it give the San Diego Padres?
The Padres have won this year's trade deadline by making multiple deals involving loads of players. Adding Clevinger could be the most impactful, though. He might be the legitimate ace starter that the club was lacking. With the team headed for a possible postseason berth, adding Clevinger should definitely help. Allen might become the team's fourth outfielder, which is a good role for him because he can play all three positions. Also acquiring a player to be named later in this transaction seems like icing on the cake at this point.
What does it give the Cleveland Indians?
Arias could be the biggest piece headed to Cleveland in this deal. A quality shortstop prospect, his path to the bigs was blocked by Fernando Tatis Jr. in San Diego. With Francisco Lindor possibly on the trade block, Arias might have an easier time reaching MLB as a member of the Indians organization. Quantrill has experience as both a starter and reliever, so he should help the pitching staff regardless of how he is used. Naylor and Hedges have big-league experience (and untapped upside), while Cantillo and Miller add to their prospect pool.
Fantasy Impact
All eight known players moved in this huge trade should see either an increase in fantasy stock (or at the very least their value will remain steady). Clevinger, Arias and Quantrill in particular should be greatly helped by this deal. Also, Naylor may finally emerge as an everyday player in Cleveland. He is worth picking up. Allen might not see as many at-bats in San Diego, although he was not a great fantasy asset to begin with.
