HALOS GET VETERAN OF VICTORINO Monday, July 27, 2015
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired outfielder Shane Victorino and cash from the Boston Red Sox for infielder Josh Rutledge.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels?
In Victorino, the Angels add another outfielder who can give them a spark in left field (a sore spot ever since they traded away Josh Hamilton to Texas). Look for the cagey-but-oft-injured Victorino to share time in left with Matt Joyce and Daniel Robertson. He might hit at or near the top of the batting order.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
For the Red Sox, this move was about dumping as much of Victorino's salary as possible while also giving the veteran a chance to play for a contender again. Rutledge was essentially a contract dump by the Halos. He might wind up as a reserve infielder for Boston (but doesn't have a role to play there, yet).
Fantasy Impact
Victorino is simply too much of an injury risk at this point in his career to make him fantasy-worthy, while Rutledge won't play regularly in Beantown. Therefore, both players dealt in this trade are not good fantasy options at this time.
