Trade Details
RED SOX GET LEFTY ROSS FROM TEXAS Tuesday, January 27, 2015
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Robbie Ross Jr. from the Texas Rangers for pitcher Anthony Ranaudo.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
In Ross, the Red Sox acquired a solid left-hander for their bullpen. While he struggled a bit when the Rangers tried him in the starting rotation, the 25-year old has performed well at the big-league level when used as a reliever. He has a chance to become the top southpaw out of Boston's bullpen in 2015.
What does it give the Texas Rangers?
For the Rangers, this is about continuing to add more starting pitching options. Ross was far better as a reliever, so they moved him out in exchange for the 25-year-old Ranaudo--who needs to start translating his minor-league success over to the big leagues. He may get that opportunity in Arlington.
Fantasy Impact
For Ross, this deal may actually hurt his fantasy value if he no longer gets a shot at the starting rotation. However, he might move into solid hold opportunities in Beantown, with the occasional save chance. As for Ranaudo, he probably needed a change of scenery at this point in order to maximize his big-league upside. Consider him a dark horse heading into 2015.
