MARINERS GET LEFTY KICKHAM FROM THE CUBS Wednesday, January 14, 2015
The Seattle Mariners acquired pitcher Mike Kickham from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Lars Huijer.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
Kickham is a serviceable left-hander who can either start or relieve, which adds to his value. With the Mariners, he could get a shot at earning a spot in their bullpen during spring training. Otherwise, he should add starting depth in Triple-A ball. The M's already have plenty of left-handed starters, so he may be more useful as a reliever for Seattle.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs?
The Cubs had acquired Kickham from San Francisco in the off-season, so they parlayed him into a younger arm in the 21-year-old Huijer. The Dutch righty is raw but has good stuff, so the Cubs will be patient with him. Huijer will probably begin 2015 in high Single-A ball. This was a very good gamble for the Cubs, as Kickham is a limited talent.
Fantasy Impact
Huijer should now be on the fantasy radar as a long-range dark horse. As for Kickham, he doesn't own much in the way of fantasy value unless he earns a prominent role pitching out of Seattle's bullpen.
