KENDALL GRAVEMAN GOES TO HOUSTON Tuesday, July 27, 2021
The Houston Astros acquired pitchers Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero from the Seattle Mariners for infielder Abraham Toro and pitcher Joe Smith.
What does it give the Houston Astros?
The key to this trade from an Astros standpoint is Graveman, who has been great for Seattle this season. He is likely to receive a few save opportunities in Houston, possibly sharing the ninth-inning role with Ryan Pressly. Montero is added bullpen depth, although he may not be needed with the big-league club right away.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
For the Mariners, Toro (the only non-reliever traded in this deal) is the key piece coming back. He is in line to eventually succeed Kyle Seager as Seattle's future third baseman. As for Smith, he will help alleviate the loss of two relievers (although Smith is more of a setup man than a closer). Either way, this deal helps Seattle more in the future than in the here and now.
Fantasy Impact
Toro's stock is rising quickly after this deal, since he was blocked in Houston by Alex Bregman at the hot corner. Graveman's save chances may dip slightly in Houston, and he is heading to a smaller park too. Be careful not to overvalue Graveman down the stretch. Smith and Montero have negligible fantasy value.
