Trade Details
STARLING MARTE MOVED TO MIAMI Monday, August 31, 2020
The Miami Marlins acquired center fielder Starling Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitcher Caleb Smith, pitcher Humberto Mejia and a player to be named later (Julio Frias - September 19, 2020).
What does it give the Miami Marlins?
The Marlins have surprised many this season with their resiliency and their quality of play. Adding Marte to play center field is a no-brainer move for them, as the outfielders they have tried in the middle of the field have not really panned out so far in 2020. Marte should patrol center field for this season and next, at least.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks?
The Diamondbacks did not hold onto Marte for very long, after acquiring him from Pittsburgh last off-season. In Smith and Mejia, Arizona adds a pair of decent young starting pitchers (something they desperately need). It appears that the D'backs are once again in retooling mode, if not a full-fledged rebuilding plan.
Fantasy Impact
Marte's fantasy stock should remain stable in Miami, though some players can struggle with their new teams shortly after the trade deadline. Smith and Mejia should see a slight spike in value because they are more likely to be consistent rotation members in Arizona than Miami. Both could be picked up in most leagues for the rest of 2020.
