PHILLIES BRING IN BRANDON WORKMAN Friday, August 21, 2020
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitchers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree, and cash from the Boston Red Sox for pitchers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies?
The Phillies desperately needed to improve their shaky bullpen, so the hope here is that both Workman and Hembree will help them. Philadelphia is currently in last place in the NL East, but they might be able to catch the first-place Braves with better relief pitching. Workman, who was Boston's closer, should get the ball in the ninth inning in Philly as well, while Hembree is a solid middle reliever.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
The Red Sox are also desperate these days, but for a different reason: they need to add quality pitchers of any kind as they rebuild the staff. Pivetta is now 27 years old but he has had some success in MLB and should get a chance to start for Boston at some point. Seabold is 24 years old and reached Double-A ball in 2019. He is a decent pickup for the BoSox. The Sox also sent cash to Philly to complete the deal.
Fantasy Impact
Workman becomes a more solid reliever in fantasy circles as a member of the Phillies, so he should be picked up if available in most leagues. Hembree, Pivetta and Seabold do not need to be added right away, but keep an eye on them moving forward.
