MARINERS MAKE A MOVE FOR DOMINGO SANTANA Friday, December 21, 2018
The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Domingo Santana from the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Ben Gamel and pitcher Noah Zavolas.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
This is a good move for Seattle, as Santana still has some untapped upside at age 26. A toolsy outfielder with both power and speed, Santana should play every day on the rebuilding Mariners in 2019, likely in left field. He joins shortstop J.P. Crawford, center-fielder Mallex Smith and veteran slugger Edwin Encarnacion as newcomers in a revamped Seattle offense.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers?
The Brewers had a logjam in their outfield, so this move gives Santana a chance to play every day. It also gives Gamel a chance at redemption, after a sputtering 2018 campaign in Seattle. Look for Gamel to serve as Milwaukee's fourth outfielder in '19. Zavolas is a decent pitching prospect for down the road, but he is several years away from prominence.
Fantasy Impact
This deal should help Santana's fantasy value greatly, since he was stuck behind Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain and Ryan Braun in Milwaukee. That situation is what Gamel now inherits, so his fantasy stock is moving in the opposite direction than Santan's at this point. Meanwhile, Zavolas is a potential keeper but he is not quite yet on the radar.
