'STROS STRIKE GOLD WITH COLE DEAL Saturday, January 13, 2018
The Houston Astros acquired pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitchers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz, infielder Colin Moran and outfielder Jason Martin.
What does it give the Houston Astros?
En route to their World Series title last season, the Astros featured one of the best groups of strikeout pitchers in the majors. Cole only adds to that wealth, and his arrival should help the team push for a second straight Series title. Expect fellow K-artist Brad Peacock to head to the bullpen, and expect Cole to thrive with less pressure on him (now that he is no longer expected to anchor a staff). Houston did give up four assets in this deal, though they are good enough on the big-league roster, and deep enough in terms of prospects, to be able to withstand this transaction.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates?
Cole recently got a pay raise from the Pirates, and with the club seemingly not near contending in '18 it looks like this might signal a rebuild. Moving their clear ace here does not bode well for the morale of the Pirates' fanbase or clubhouse, especially since Cole is likely entering his prime (age 27). Additionally, the return here for Pittsburgh is not elite; the most proven newcomer is Musgrove, and while he can replace some of Cole's strikeouts he is not nearly as promising a starting pitcher. Moran is a former top prospect who can play several different infield positions and has some pop (so he might be a steal if given more opportunity). Like Musgrove, Feliz is a talented strikeout pitcher (but a reliever) who struggles to keep his ERA down. Martin brings a solid power/speed mix, and should be able to push for a role in the Pirates outfield soon.
Fantasy Impact
Cole gets a strong fantasy upgrade because of this swap, mostly because playing on a contender should bring a major uptick in wins (after last season's 12 with Pittsburgh). Musgrove as well should become more valuable fantasy-wise, if only because this trade gives him a chance at a bigger role as a starting pitcher. Moran suddenly becomes a sleeper (assuming he can push for regular at-bats in Pittsburgh's infield, especially challenging vet David Freese at third base), and Martin too might benefit from the change of scenery. Meanwhile talented Feliz will probably see his fantasy fortunes stay the same, since he still might not have a major role despite changing teams.
