Texas Rangers AL West
Trade Details
RANGERS REEL IN LEFT-HANDER MATT MOORE Friday, December 15, 2017
The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Matt Moore and international bonus pool money in 2017-18 from the San Francisco Giants for pitchers Sam Wolff and Israel Cruz.
What does it give the Texas Rangers?
The Rangers are desperate to add more quality to their starting rotation, so the hope here is that Moore can rediscover past form. The 28-year-old left-hander struggled badly in San Francisco last season but has the stuff to turn things around in Texas. The future considerations also acquired in this deal will be international signing bonus pool money.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants?
For the Giants, this deal is largely about shedding Moore's $9 million salary in order to reinvest it in position-player acquisitions. In Wolff and Cruz, San Francisco was able to land a pair of solid bullpen prospects (though Cruz is extremely raw and will need several more years to develop). In fact, Wolff may find his way to the Bay Area at some point in 2018.
Fantasy Impact
Moore left a great pitchers' park in San Francisco and the better league for pitchers (NL) and now finds himself in Texas in a supreme hitters' park in the AL. Good luck! Clearly, his fantasy stock is trending in the wrong direction right now. Both Wolff and Cruz might one day become fantasy factors out of the Giants' bullpen, but not now.
