Had outstanding power for the catching position. Was also a natural leader with a good work ethic and intelligence. Behind the dish, he was smooth with a good throwing arm and soft hands. Lacked consistency at the plate. His walk/strikeout ratio was typically not great. At times, he surrendered a few too many passed balls during the course of a big-league season.
