Mets signed 1B Brandon Allen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Allen spent 2013 with the Padres' Triple-A club in Tucson, finishing with an .825 OPS. He'll be competing for a bench role but will most likely open the 2014 season back in Triple-A in the Mets' system. In a handful of Major League at-bats each season between 2009-12, he compiled a meager .665 OPS with a 35% strikeout rate.

Forecaster Impact
Allen was released by the Rangers at the end of spring training. The 27-year-old owns a .203/.290/.375 batting line over 389 plate appearances in the majors and spent part of last season with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Central League. He'll function as organizational depth.
