With a little less velocity, he became a dominant, three-pitch pitcher: he threw a two-seam fastball, a slider and a splitter. Frequently, he pitched down in the strike zone and often induced soft grounders. His lack of durability decreased his value. Later on in his career, his effectiveness dwindled in the second half of seasons because he did not go after hitters as aggressively as he usually did earlier.
