Owned a quick bat and the ability to hit for a high average in the minor leagues. For a big guy, he ran fairly well and also stole some bases. Could be used all over the field, which added to his value in the big leagues. Had a tendency to hit down on the ball, which helped his batting average but not his slugging percentage. Did not walk enough to offset his propensity to strike out. Did not have a position to call his own.
