Trade Details
FRANCOEUR TO THE FISH IN A 3-TEAM SWAP Wednesday, August 24, 2016
In a three team trade, the Miami Marlins acquired outfielder Jeff Francoeur from the Atlanta Braves; Atlanta acquired catcher Matthew Foley from the Marlins and infielder Dylan Moore from the Texas Rangers, and Texas acquired international bonus slot two in 2016-17 and international bonus slot four in 2016-17 from the Marlins, and international bonus slot four in 2016-17 from the Braves.
What does it give the Miami Marlins?
Miami lost top power hitter and right-fielder Giancarlo Stanton (possibly for the rest of the season) due to groin strain recently, and he is now on the 15-day disabled list. So, the Marlins add Francoeur here to help Ichiro as a platoon option in right field down the stretch.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves?
The Braves do not need Francoeur, a 32-year-old journeyman outfielder, since their 2016 season is lost. So, they add a couple of decent prospects in Foley and Moore, while also surrendering one international bonus pool slot. Atlanta may also bring Francoeur back this winter.
What does it give the Texas Rangers?
For the Rangers, this deal was an opportunity to get better positioned for the next international signing season (while only surrendering prospect Moore in the process). Since Texas is already loaded with middle infield talent, they could afford to deal Moore away at this time.
Fantasy Impact
Francoeur is a platoon outfielder, so his fantasy value shall remain limited in Miami down the stretch. Foley and Moore are not quite fantasy-worthy, as Foley is several years away from MLB and Moore may not have enough tools to become an everyday player in MLB.
