MARLINS BOOST BULLPEN WITH CERVENKA Saturday, August 6, 2016
The Miami Marlins acquired pitcher Hunter Cervenka from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Michael Mader and outfielder Anfernee Seymour.
What does it give the Miami Marlins?
The Marlins are making a strong push for a National League Wild Card berth, and Cervenka can help with that. He's been very solid as a lefty reliever this season with Atlanta, posting 10 holds with a 3.09 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts in 35.0 innings. He can slot in right away to help shore up a Miami mop-up crew that has somewhat lost its way lately (with recent struggles by A.J. Ramos and Fernando Rodney, especially).
What does it give the Atlanta Braves?
Mader and Seymour are solid (if not elite) prospects who are both showing definite progress in the minors this season. Mader is a starting pitching prospect who has demonstrated improved control of his stuff this year, while Seymour has truly elite speed in the outfield and on the basepaths (with 37 steals in the lower minors). That said, neither of Mader nor Seymour looks likely to reach the majors soon.
Fantasy Impact
Cervenka might have some fantasy appeal down the stretch this season in super-deep leagues that count holds. That said, he's otherwise not much of a fantasy factor. Do keep Mader and Seymour on the keeper radar, since both have the talent to one day push for a starting job (and they're joining an Atlanta organization that seems intent on going young for the next several years).
