This move was an absolute must for the Red Sox, since their starting rotation has been in shambles all season. Pomeranz will join David Price and Steven Wright as locks to pitch every fifth day in Boston. The BoSox may seek even more starting pitching help before the July 31 MLB trade deadline. Pomeranz was enjoying an excellent season in San Diego, but he will get far more run support in Beantown. To get Pomeranz, the Sox surrendered a quality prospect in Espinoza.

Since the Padres are not going anywhere this season, they did very well to turn Pomeranz--who was enjoying his best MLB campaign in 2016--into Espinoza, an 18-year-old stud prospect. The Venezuelan right-hander is extremely green but a potential gem. He is not likely to reach the majors for at least two more seasons but should already be considered one of San Diego's five starting pitchers for the future. This was an excellent trade for the Padres, under the circumstances.

Pomeranz still has good fantasy value for 2016, as he should get much more run support in Boston. However, no longer pitching half the time at PETCO Park may hurt his overall stock a little. As for Espinoza, he is a quality keeper-league prospect who is a few seasons away from becoming a viable fantasy option.
