BRAVES BRING BACK VET RELIEVER O'FLAHERTY Sunday, March 27, 2016
The Atlanta Braves acquired pitcher Eric O'Flaherty from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves?
The rebuilding Braves have very little lefty bullpen depth on the big club, and O'Flaherty can help them with that. The veteran lefty was dominant for Atlanta from '09-'13 (before arm troubles), so the organization knows what it has in him. With Ian Krol and Alex Torres both recently sent down, O'Flaherty should expect a lot of work as a key veteran port-sider coming out of the 'pen.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates?
O'Flaherty was brought in this spring to mostly be a camp arm for the Pirates, so they get a little cash here after letting him show he can still perform well. O'Flaherty enjoyed a solid spring (if not a dominant one) but with fellow lefty hopeful Cory Luebke also pitching well for Pittsburgh lately, the Pirates needed to choose between the two (with Kyle Lobstein also in the mix).
Fantasy Impact
Even if O'Flaherty manages to regain some of his past glory, he's a lefty bullpen specialist (and so is unlikely to help many fantasy squads, unless he sees a lot of holds chances--which seems unlikely this year with Atlanta). For the Pirates, Luebke is a deep sleeper (due to past promise) but appears set for a middle relief role as well (if he makes the big club's roster).
