BREWERS GIVE LIRIANO ANOTHER CHANCE Thursday, January 28, 2016
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Rymer Liriano from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Trevor Seidenberger.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers?
Liriano is still a very talented, toolsy outfielder. Therefore, it was somewhat surprising that the Padres designated him for assignment recently. Since the Brewers are in full rebuilding mode, his acquisition makes a ton of sense. Look for Liriano to compete for the starting center field job in spring training. He also acts as insurance in case Milwaukee trades veteran right-fielder Ryan Braun at some point this season.
What does it give the San Diego Padres?
For the Padres, they decided to go in another direction with Liriano, whose stock within the organization fell dramatically last season with the arrival of right-fielder Matt Kemp and versatile first baseman/outfielder Will Myers. Therefore, the club designated Liriano for assignment and moved him in exchange for pitching prospect Seidenberger, a 23-year-old left-handed reliever with some upside.
Fantasy Impact
Liriano's fantasy value could potentially skyrocket if he earns a starting job in Milwaukee this season. He is now a definite sleeper heading into 2016. As for Seidenberger, his fantasy value will always be somewhat limited.
