TRUMBO TO THE O'S; CLEVENGER TO THE M'S Wednesday, December 2, 2015
The Baltimore Orioles acquired infielder/outfielder Mark Trumbo and pitcher C.J. Riefenhauser from the Seattle Mariners for catcher Steve Clevenger.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles?
In Trumbo, the Orioles receive a decent insurance policy in case they cannot re-sign free agent first baseman Chris Davis. Like Davis, Trumbo strikes out a ton but owns prodigious power. Riefenhauser adds more depth in Baltimore's bullpen. This is a solid trade for the O's, as Clevenger was one of three catchers on the roster.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
The Mariners needed to upgrade their offense from the catching position this off-season. So, first they signed veteran Chris Iannetta as a free agent and now land the underrated Clevenger (who figures to fight for at-bats with Iannetta all season long in 2016). He may also see time at first base and designated hitter.
Fantasy Impact
Trumbo moves from spacious Seattle to bandbox Baltimore, in terms of ballpark dimensions, so his fantasy stock should be on the rise here. Ditto Clevenger, who could see a spike in playing time with the Mariners. Riefenhauser's overall value is minimal at this time.
