BLUE JAYS BRING IN BARNEY Sunday, September 13, 2015
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Darwin Barney from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Jack Murphy.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays?
The recent injury to star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki necessitated this depth move by the Jays. With Tulo expected to miss a few weeks, Toronto needs Barney to help shore up the team's infield options down the stretch as they push for the postseason. Barney joins Ryan Goins and Cliff Pennington in a likely platoon of good-fielding, light-hitting middle infielders. As a September trade acquisition Barney isn't eligible for the playoff roster (should the Jays qualify for the postseason).
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers?
Murphy is a big target behind the dish and has shown solid ability throwing out base-runners, so he'll provide ready organizational depth for the Dodgers at catcher. Expect him to be in the mix in coming years for backup duty at the big league level.
Fantasy Impact
Both Barney and Murphy are more helpful with the glove than the bat, making them players to avoid in the fantasy universe.
