METS TAKE A CHANCE ON LEFTY O'FLAHERTY Tuesday, August 4, 2015
The New York Mets acquired pitcher Eric O'Flaherty and cash from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later.
What does it give the New York Mets?
The Mets lost a key member of the bullpen when lefty specialist Jerry Blevins was lost for the '15 campaign (to a forearm injury), and they're obviously hoping O'Flaherty can step in and replace him. Based on O'Flaherty's years of excellence in that role for Atlanta (until 2013), it's not a terrible gamble. That said, O'Flaherty is having a dismal season so far, so it may be wishful thinking by the Mets as they push for the playoffs.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics?
The A's are in sell-off mode since they're not in the playoff hunt, so dumping Blevins and his contract serves that objective. Not only do they save money here, the A's pick up an intriguing pitching prospect in Frias. Like O'Flaherty the righty reliever has an ugly ERA this season (7.22 in the minors) but he also has solid strikeout ability.
Fantasy Impact
Even if O'Flaherty can get himself back on track down the stretch he doesn't hold appeal in many fantasy formats (since he's a limited-inning lefty specialist). Frias as well isn't a candidate for fantasy consideration right now, but his K-ability might make him worth remembering for future seasons in deeper leagues.
