OAKLAND ADDS RELIEVER CODY MARTIN Thursday, July 2, 2015
The Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Cody Martin from the Atlanta Braves for international bonus slot two in 2015-16.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics?
In Martin, the A's landed a 25-year-old right-hander and California native who has struck out 24 batters in 21.2 innings so far this season. That's the good news. The bad? He sports an ugly 5.40 earned-run average in 2015. Still, there's some upside here. He should at some point see time out of Oakland's bullpen.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves?
For the Braves, this move is about getting some added bonus slot money for international signings. They decided to part with Martin, despite his strikeout ability coming out of the bullpen. Atlanta has proven this season that they are unafraid of dealing away relievers--as they earlier parted ways with closer Craig Kimbrel.
Fantasy Impact
Martin still has some fantasy upside, so he might get a solid opportunity to become a late-inning reliever for the A's at some point.
