The Angels are just looking for some pitching depth with this move. Smith could get the call from the minor leagues, but his role will be to eat up some innings out of the bullpen. The 25-year old offers little in the way of upside, but he is serviceable.

For the Athletics, this is a deal to shed a player for minimal return. Smith struggled badly (1.1 IP, 5 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) in his only two relief appearances with Oakland earlier this season, so a change of scenery was badly need for all parties concerned.

There is nothing to see here, as Smith will be hit or miss to stick as a big-league reliever for the rest of his pitching career.
