CARDS GET CATCHING DEPTH WITH OHLMAN Tuesday, February 3, 2015
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired catcher Michael Ohlman from the Baltimore Orioles for cash.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals?
In Ohlman, the Cardinals get a 24-year-old backstop with some upside. St. Louis is pretty deep at the catching position, though, and boast one of baseball's best in veteran Molina Still, this looks like a no-risk addition to the organization. Ohlman has a chance to climb all the way to third-string status in 2015 and might be ready for backup duties next season.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles?
The Orioles needed a roster spot after acquiring outfielder Snider from the Pirates last week, so they designated Ohlman for assignment. The O's are also fairly solid in terms of numbers at the catching position, with starter Wieters backed up by the likes of Joseph and Clevenger Arencibia and Lavarnway on minor-league contracts.
Fantasy Impact
Ohlman's fantasy stock remains in neutral, since he still looks to be stuck behind a quality catcher. Therefore, he isn't recommendable on draft day unless Molina suffers a long-term injury.
